The gulls at JFK are present in the breeding season and commute during all daylight hours over the airport, collecting food for their hungry chicks.
The gulls at Woensdrecht airbase are present in the winter period and commute early morning and late afternoon over the airbase to / from the feeding grounds.
19
Each minute JFK has a departing / landing aircraft and is part of the world wide flight schedule plans.

Woensdrecht has far less aircraft movements and is autonomous in its flight planning. This gives the the possibility to adapt the aircaft’s flight schedule to the flight schedule of the commuting gulls.

Prior to my proposal, the Game Fund had given recommendations to reduce the number of bird strikes. After my proposal, a couple of other persons have written these reports:

* Dr. Kadis and Mr. Makris. November 2005. Inventory, description, mapping and evaluation of the habitat and flora and fauna species of the Larnaca Airport Area.
* Dr Leshem. January 2006. Introductory visit concerning the bird-aircaft conflict at the airports of Larnaca and Paphos, Cyprus.
* Gary F. Searing, YVR Vancouver Airport Services. May 2006. Wildlife Risk Management: Larnaca International Airport, Cyprus. An initial Plan.
* Gary F. Searing, February 2007. Hermes Airports Training and Implementation Report.
28
With all these studies, reports and trainings, the problem should be solved!
Shouldn’t it?

"In a lively discussion many..."
  • In a lively discussion many options were passed in review, for example a small-scaled bird detection radar or attaching satellite radio transmitters to the birds in order to be able to study their movements.
  • In the end, it was agreed that these technical devices will only be successful if they’re used by professionals. Therefore, the first step is to train the bird control personnel.
